Our volunteer nurses can work in many areas. They can work in our
Staff Health area completing necessary paperwork for other volunteers
to respond to disasters. Also, they may work on the scene of a local
or national disaster, providing very basic care. There is a series of
three classes that each nurse needs to take. Those include a new volunteer
orientation, Fulfilling Our Mission, and Health Services Response Workshop.
The volunteer then is trained and ready to volunteer with us. The time
commitment can vary depending on the volunteer’s availability, interest,
and goals. |

The Children’s Surgical Center (CSC) created CASC in 2006 in response
to a growing number of survivors of acid attacks accessing the center
for treatment. As a result of the extensive and unique treatment needs
presented by survivors of acid burns, CSC felt that a separate organization
dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, social and economic needs
of survivors was necessary to provide comprehensive treatment. |

Fill in for vacationing or sick nurse: Triage patients who are seeing
the provider, call in meds (with approval of NP), assist provider as
needed, possibly enter visit related info into database, give injections,
perform TB skin tests. We care for ONLY HIV+ patients, so the nurse
would need to be very comfortable with that. They will experience a
variety of patients from those who are academically educated as well
as educated about their disease process to those who are disenfranchised
socially with little to no resources. For someone who is interested
in this area of nursing we offer a great experience to gain knowledge
in addressing the many needs our patients have. We probably would not
be a good fit for someone who needs a lot of structure. We work by appointments
but do have patients that walk in having a crisis, so we try to see
them. |

LifeWaterMedical Ministries focuses on meeting the physical needs
of the people we minister to along with bringing them the story of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. We focus on the needs in the remote areas of
Africa, where the medical needs are great and the clean, safe drinking
water is in short supply. We believe that if we are to show people that
we care about them, we need to help provide for their physical needs
as well as spiritual. To this end, we send short-term teams to provide
medical care in clinics set up in the bush and in the villages and conduct
water purification projects to bring people clean drinking water. In
addition, we construct the buildings to house the churches that are
planted as a result of our evangelistic efforts that are the primary
focus of each LifeWaterMedical mission trip. (Please Note: There is
a need for medical professionals on all medical teams. Registered Nurses,
Physician Assistants, Medical Doctors, etc are essential members of
our teams. However, non-medical personnel are important to the medical
teams as well. A professional medical career is not a requirement for
participation in a LifeWaterMedical mission trip.) |

understand their options and assist them to make healthy choices for

A medical church planting trip incorporates medical, dental, and vision
ministries into our church-planting strategies. Setting up a primary
care clinic in areas where a new church is to be planted, these teams
utilize doctors, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, physician assistants,
physical therapists, pharmacist, paramedics, optometrists, medical students,
and any other person willing to serve. Our objective is to augment the
existing church planting efforts by demonstrating the love of Christ
in a tangible way and to strengthen relationships between the local
church on the field and the surrounding community. (Please note that
the ministries offered on any particular trip are dependent on the team
members recruited. For example, dental can only be offered by those
teams that have recruited a dentist—check with team leaders for more
details). |

We are a volunteer humanitarian group working to improve health care
in remote, impoverished, and isolated regions in Nicaragua. Through
ongoing material, educational, and facility improvement collaboration
with local partners we hope to bring desperately needed improvements
in health care delivery to underserved populations in Nicaragua, primarily
on the north Atlantic coast presently. Our fundamental overriding principle
is;
It is better to teach, than to do. General medical and dental clinics
are located in remote villages in Nicaragua. Nurses take vital signs,
interview patients, do wound care, dispense medications in pharmacy,
assist dentist in some cases, and assist physicians. Spanish is very
helpful, but not mandatory. |

Volunteers might be asked to serve in several different ways including

health consultation, registering patients, entering data from forms,
stocking supplies, handling the press/media, etc. We will do our best

Concern America is a unique nonprofit, nonsectarian, nongovernmental
development and refugee aid organization - unique in that its philosophy
emphasizes the transference of skills and thus the creation of opportunity
(seen as a more permanent solution), not just the placement of resources
into impoverished regions. Concern America trains local populations
in health, education, agriculture, and/or environmental health (appropriate
technology), and accompanies these populations from eight to ten years,
working with and through them to build local, functional social systems
that meet their basic needs. Eventually, the Concern America team can
be withdrawn, leaving in place trained local people who are "capacitated"
to continue the work and to bring it to neighboring communities. |

We are a non-profit organization run by women but not limited to women's

might include a plastic surgeon, an opthamologist, OB-GYN, pediatrician
or a dentist. Whatever their health needs we try to create a team that
can meet these needs. We have different specialties joining us and we

The International Medical Alliance (IMA) was founded by Ines Allen,
a resident of Rancho Mirage, California. Ines began working for various
philanthropic causes in the 1980's and discovered that the work she
found to be most satisfying was her volunteer efforts for the Flying
Samaritans, a group of pilots and doctors whose goals it is to provide
medical care to the indigent residents of Mexico. Ines dreamed of returning
to Ecuador, the country of her birth, to provide the same type of medical
care for the country's poorest residents, a third of whom would never
receive medical care for their infirmities without an intervention from
volunteer medical professionals. IMA, designated as a not-for-profit
entity by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service in 2002, has organized five
trips to Ecuador with teams of plastic and orthopedic surgeons, doctors
in a variety of specialties, dentists and support staff. Thanks to the
cooperation of the government and institutions of Ecuador, they work
in a temporary clinic/surgical center where they have provided medical
and dental services to 20,000 Ecuadorians since IMA's inception. |

HIV/AIDS & the psychosocial and clinical issues that our clients may

interaction; as well as teaches communication and listening skills through
a variety of interactive exercises. All interested persons must complete
a pre-training interview before they may begin the training. This interview

Children's Relief International is a proud member of this ancient
community of faith and work. We were founded in early 2000 with the
initial goal of providing aid for the community of Dondo, Mozambique,
a cluster of villages totaling 60,000 souls. The work began in partnership
with Jeronimo and Noemia Cessito, local Christian leaders who had a
vision to help their community. They named the project Ray of Light,
and in the ensuing years it has grown to include several schools, a
medical clinic, farm, AIDS hospice, child sponsorship program and several
church plants. In 2003 we started a second project in Kenya located
just west of Nairobi in Kikuya County (the area where the film Out of
Africa was shot). It's called the Mayatima Project after the Swahili
word for orphan, and as the name suggests, its focus is on the care
of HIV-AIDS orphans in that area. It was started by George and Jane
Kairie, local Christian leaders who provided the original vision for
the work and who continue to direct the project to this day. In the
past three years, the project has grown to include a poultry and dairy
farm and nearly 100 children enrolled in a child sponsorship program. |

These doctors and nurses volunteer their time and services, pay their own expenses, and help arrange for shipments of donated supplies and equipment. Teams usually stay from 7 to 10 days, providing surgery for children as well as health screening and training for local medical providers. The types of surgery vary with each trip according to need and available resources. Recent trips have included cleft palate, ear, nose and throat, and club foot corrections. As many as 75 to 100 children may receive surgical services on each trip, while scores of others receive dental services, medical consultations and medications. Everything is provided free-of-charge. Children who need additional services are referred to the stateside (international inbound) program either in our chapter or in one of the other HTC chapters. |

Missionaries Bobby and Sherry Burnette have worked in Haiti since
1972, and have lived fulltime in Haiti since July, 1991. Their goal
is to rear a generation of educated, Christian children to help Haiti’s
future, and to save Haiti – one child at a time. As described on our
Home page. Our new Jesus Healing Center will open late in 2008. It will
be a school clinic. We operate 14 schools in 11 villages, educating
and feeding about 5,000 children daily. It will be a community clinic,
and it will be a residence malnutrition clinic. We also conduct mobile
medical clinics to remote villages. In the healing center, a nurse would
work with and under direction of an M.D. or could work alone, assessing
physical conditions and caring for injuries and skin infections in the
school clinic, caring for malnourished infants and children in the malnutrition
clinic and assessing/treating conditions/injuries in the community clinic.
Nurses would assess conditions and injuries in the remote med clinics
also. Nurses could volunteer to work at clinic in one week or greater
intervals or could join a one-week long mission team conducting remote
clinics. Speaking Creole would be a bonus, but not necessary. We have
interpreters. Tropical medicine or pediatric medicine would also be
a bonus. |

A team of health care professionals and other volunteers sets up "health

with local health care providers, we administer general medical and
dental care, and provide free medicines to patients. Depending on the
make up of the team and the needs of the patients, certain specialties
may be utilized. Each time a team is formed, we learn of each members'
skills (i.e. their specialties) and discuss with local health officials
their needs to determine how to contribute the best possible care to
the local patient population. We always maintain a professional respect
for the local health care delivery system as well as any religious or
cultural customs associated with illness and health. Our health camps
are not all work, however. Ample time is included for exploring the
surrounding region. A typical camp day comprises six hours of clinical
work. Depending on the group's wishes, we may tour or hike for the remainder
of the day. We return for a relaxing evening to enjoy a meal and conversation
before retiring for the night. |

On July 31, 1995, AMM opened an interim free medical and dental clinic
at the Institute for Human Services (IHS), a nonprofit organization
that shelters and cares for the homeless in Honolulu. Note that an interim
free clinic is one that attempts to connect patients with ongoing services
elsewhere and thus does not compete long-term with established providers.
In June 2002, with major support from some of Hawaii's largest foundations,
AMM relocated its clinic to a building it rehabbed on the grounds of
the Palama Settlement, in Honolulu's low-income Kalihi-Palama district.
Today AMM continues to provide health services to individuals, including
many recent immigrants, with no medical insurance and to operate the
only 100% free medical and dental clinic in Hawaii. |

Hospice of the Bluegrass is a non-profit organization which provides
support and care for persons in the last phase of an incurable illness.
Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care
and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients
and families may be free to attain a degree of mental, physical and
spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them. Hospice
care usually takes place in the home, but may may also be provided in
a nursing home, hospital, and the Hospice Care Centers. Patients receive
skilled, multidisciplinary care. The interdisciplinary team consists
of the patient's doctor, a registered nurse, social worker, chaplain,
bereavement counselor, home care aid and volunteers. Hospice of the
Bluegrass serves 25 counties and is a member of the National Hospice
Organization. Hospice of the Bluegrass is certified by medicare and
medicaid as well as being licensed by the State of Kentucky. The Patient
Care Volunteer is assigned to a patient and usually visits weekly, or
as needed to provide companionship or to just be a presence in their
home. Their "home" can also be a nursing home facility. The volunteer
may also provide respite for the caregiver to take a break or run errands.

The Christian Appalachian Project is an interdenominational, non-profit
Christian organization that has served families in poverty in Eastern
Kentucky since 1964. We have over 30 programs including home repair,
child and family development, adult education, elderly services, disability
services, substance abuse recovery, spouse abuse shelters, disaster
relief, and more. Most of our programs run throughout the year and are
staffed by employees and long-term and short-term volunteers. We utilize
volunteer nurses at our summer camps. Camp usually starts at the beginning
of June and runs through the end of July. Our two camps serve children
from low-income families who pay only $10/week for their children to
attend. Nurse responsibilities are as follows: 1. Stock and distribute
first aid kits to groups. 2. Receive and review the medical needs of
each camper and receive any medications the campers have. 3. Check campers
for lice and other medical concerns when they arrive. 4. Fill out prescription
schedule for each camper and distribute meds. 5. Inform counselors of
any medical concerns. 6. Tend to the medical nees of campers and staff
throughout the week (nurse will be on call all week). We are an interdenominational
Christian organization. However, our volunteers are not required to
be Christian. |

We are from all walks of life but with one shared purpose: WE CARE.
Cape CARES sends nine teams to Honduras offering free medical and dental
services to people in locations where there is no access to ongoing
medical treatment. We offer friendship and develop a bond with the people
in the villages we visit. Sometimes a smile or a hand on the shoulder

uninsured of the west side of Grand Rapids, MI, in Jesus name". Anyone
working here must profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. You cannot
provide hope... in Jesus name if you don't know Him. We have many opportunities
for nurses, depending on their skill level. We have a faith community
nurse who goes as our representative into the community, we also utilize
Nurse Practitioners as providers in the clinic, - we are transitioning
to a "nurse triage" office and education position for RN's who volunteer.
LPN's, MA's and CNA's are utilized to assist in vital signs, simple
lab tests and patient histories. Everyone working in this clinic is
volunteer and at the end of this month we will be covered by the Federal
Torte Act for malpractice as well as the current coverage we have under
the Michigan Good Samaritan Act and the Volunteer Protection Act. We
offer our services free of charge and do not provide care to any insured
persons, including those with Medicaid or Medicare. Our target are the
people who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid because they
are working, but perhaps are working a couple of part time jobs or are
not offered health care in their job. So financially, they must make
less than twice Federal Poverty guidelines. |

Hope for the City is a privately funded, 501(c)3 relief organization
that was established by Dennis and Megan Doyle in 2000 to fight poverty,
hunger and disease by utilizing corporate surplus. The Minnesota-based,
non-profit organization collects overstock products from top retailers,
medical companies, and food distributors nationwide and donates the
items to people in need locally, across the country and around the world.
Since its inception, Hope for the City has donated approximately $400
million in wholesale value of goods. Locally, Hope for the City distributes
corporate surplus to non-profit organizations that serve the poor in
the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. Hope for the City makes an incredible
monthly impact on the non-profit organizations it serves. Our Community
Partners reach 30,000 individuals in need each month. Because of their
partnership with Hope for the City, they can now reach 40,000 individuals.
In other words, Hope for the City touches approximately 10,000 individuals
in need each month. Internationally, Hope For The City delivers medicines,
medical supplies and equipment to developing countries all over the
world. With our access to medical resources, we are able to equip a
4-5 story hospital with everything from hospital beds and exam tables,
to supplies and medicines. One new resource, which we call "A Hospital
in a Box" can literally get a hospital started anywhere in the world
with just one container. |

International Health Partners is a non-governmental non-profit organization
formed to facilitate partnerships from all over the world with Tanzania
to improve health care. The IHP-USINC is a sister organization in the
US that helps raise funds. The IHP TZ is an official NGO (non governmental
international organization) in Tanzania that is on the ground working
with the funds to develop the projects. While working on our first project,
we were overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to help improve
the health care system in Tanzania. They recognized the huge problems
that Tanzania faces especially with the high incidence of both HIV/AIDS
and poverty. 2008 Projects: In Mwanza, IHP is currently designing and
renovating a Women’s Health and Birthing Center. The area has the highest
maternal and infant mortality rate. In spite of training traditional
midwifes, the high rate has continued. The East of Lake Victoria Diocese
of the Lutheran Church has donated a lovely 16 room complex for the
beginning of a health center soon to be developed into a hospital. The
large number of orphans due to death of parents by AIDS and the large
number of older women who are sometimes thought to be witches and are
killed, make an idea pairing for an orphanage and a women’s wisdom center.
The orphanage will be constructed in family groups with the older women
fulfilling the role of grandmother. The need for a specialized non-profit
pediatric HIV/AIDS hospital is great since none currently exists in
Tanzania. All the plans for the hospital are ready as well as approval
by various governmental organizations and land is in the process of
being purchased. The needs for this hospital are financial at this point,
with later needs encompassing volunteers, students, equipment, and research.
The project proposal is available to those who are interested. Besides
the plans, the proposal includes equipment lists, supply lists, furnishing
lists and a comprehensive list of proposals for hospital projects. These
activities include outreach, educational programs, specialized maternity
and infant care for HIV+ mothers and infants as well as an orphanage
for under 5 children with HIV/AIDS. A hostel for volunteers is also
planned. In addition to the above projects, medical teams and personnel
as well as volunteers come to help improve the health care in Tanzania.
IHP serves as the vehicle to assist them to work in areas suited to
their desires and abilities as well as the needs of the people in the
selected area. |

International Crisis Aid’s purpose is to assist in sustaining life,

with other relief organizations bringing necessary materials, foods
and medicines to people who are in crisis situations where life and
death situations exist. To accomplish this vision we will continue to
target our efforts in no-go zones where other organizations cannot or
will not go. Our programs and services have reached out to children
and families in need from Cambodia, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Pakistan,
North Korea, Indonesia and Sudan. These programs include feeding, medical,
orphanages, disaster relief, girls’ schools, community development,
rescuing girls from sex-trafficking, etc. International Crisis Aid leads
groups of nurses, doctors and other volunteers on international medical
mission trips several times a year. We travel to Angacha, Ethiopia to
provide services in a village that did not have medical care prior to
our arrival. We have since established a medical clinic and four outposts
where we provide care. Volunteers participate in multiple capacities,
including providing first-aid, assisting in surgeries, distributing
food, running the pharmacy, etc. International Crisis Aid was founded
on Christian principles and beliefs. However, we do not discriminate
against anyone—including the people we serve and/or potential volunteers.
All applicants should be comfortable participating on teams consisting
of church members and other people in ministry. |

self-esteem and muscle tone. WoE is a family owned and operated non-profit
(501)(c)(3) organization which specializes in a practice known as therapeutic
horseback riding. Our therapeutic horses serve as unique vehicles for
exercising one's body and mind. Horseback riding provides physical,
mental and emotional rewards. The horse's gentle rhythmic movement helps
increase the balance, muscle control and strength of riders with impaired
mobility. Riding motivates children and adults with learning challenges
to increase their levels of concentration, patience and discipline.
A relationship forms between horse and rider allowing riders to overcome
fears and develop trust in the therapeutic team and themselves. We are
a North American Riders for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) Center
and we adhere to their standards for safety and operations. We are in
our 9th year of serving the special needs community in Cabarrus County
and the surrounding areas. Over 100 riders have consistently taken part
in our program since it began. In addition, approximately one hundred
(100) children with special needs have had mini-riding experiences at
the Ranch through field trips from area schools. Nurses are needed to
be on hand to assist with any medical emergency or basic scrapes, bruises
etc that might happen during summer camp. |

Global Health Services Evangelism is our fundamental goal, and essential
programs such as church growth; leadership training, camps and medical
ministries on most occasions are the catalyst for effective evangelism.
Global Health Services seeks to successfully build and maintain hospitals,
smoothly handle short-term clinics in isolated villages, and provide
medical professionals with unique opportunities to successfully introduce
the love of Christ. Short-term, long-term and career medical and support
missionaries are required now to grow and maintain a broad variety of
medical services. |

Global Medic Force is an international not-for-profit organization that engages
healthcare professionals to rapidly transfer their expertise on HIV
care and infectious diseases to colleagues in developing countries,
using an innovative method of clinical mentoring. Unlike other organizations,
GMF volunteer clinical mentors do not provide patient care directly.
Instead, they equip local caregivers with the skills needed to take
care of their own patients. As a result, thousands of patients receive
HIV care when none existed before, care delivered by their own healthcare
providers, within existing resource limitations. |

been the driving force ever since. Each of our 8 summer session we bring
in 10 volunteer nurses to work with our campers. Nurses are matched
up with a cabin of campers, they dispense routine meds for these campers
and spend time PLAYING with them to monitor their health and wellness.
Our "Body Shop" (infirmary) is staffed by nurses 24 hours a day to deal
with any emergencies, volunteer nurses always have the support of these
staff nurses. We also have 2 residential nurses who are at camp for
the entire summer, these nurses are also resources for the volunteer

The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program is currently recruiting volunteers to support the Public Health Reserve Corps/Medical Reserve Corps. It has been determined that thousands of medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to assist the Health Department in emergency response efforts. In the event of an epidemic or a bioterrorism attack, Public Health Reserve Corps (PHRC) volunteer nurses would be called upon to assist in providing medication or immunizations. In a worst case scenario, this could mean providing these services for all residents of Shelby County, nearly 1 million people. To accomplish this monumental task , we would have to staff 20 public health clinics located throughout Shelby County for 24 hours, 7 days per week for 10 consecutive days, requiring the assistance of 4,600 volunteers each day. In an effort to expedite our alerting processes, our program is trying to pre-register as many healthcare professional as possible so, when a disaster occurs, the emergency response will be more efficient and effective due to the fact of verify the nurses information in advance. Nurses may register at www.shelbybtvolunteer.com pr contact Jennifer Price, Volunteer Coordinator at 901-379-7156. |

healthcare provision in developing countries. You could be sharing your
skills in countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia or Namibia. Community
nurse placements focus on community-based primary health care. You could
be doing a combination of clinical nursing, health promotion and informal
training with a local counterpart, such as village health workers or
nurse assistants. Placements deal with all general health issues, but
key areas tend to include maternal and child health, family planning

Our agency is always happy to have nurses as volunteers. CASA, Court
Appointed Special Advocates are trained volunteers who advocate for
abused and neglected children who are wards of the Court and are in
foster care. When one of these children has medical needs or has been
severely physically abused such as shaken baby it is very helpful to
have someone on the case who understands medical terminology. |

Ranges from program location and length of stay. One week placement
price start at $750 |
Nurses must submit copy of their RN credentials, nursing students
must provide university letter verifying enrollment. For placements
in South America, volunteers should be proficient in Spanish. Prior
experience abroad not necessary, all levels of expertise are appreciated
and project placement is confirmed accordingly. |
We are a 501(c)(3) organization, whose program fees are tax deductible for US nurses. Volunteers with medical training; doctors, nurses, paramedics, lab
technicians participate in direct patient care such as diagnosing, injections,
IV starts and lab work. There is a wide variety of cases but disease
such as malaria, HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and syphilis, as well as childbirth/maternity
needs are most common. Nursing students are welcome and assist with
tasks like dressing wounds, record and immunization chart keeping, helping
dispense medications, helping to screen and organize patients and assisting
with administrative needs or seminars. Most nursing and medical placements
are located in busy community clinics which are typically understaffed,
have a lack of supplies and equipment. The program is challenging and
the need in these countries is extremely high for international assistance.
Volunteers live with a local host family near the clinic, are provided
meals and a comfortable living arrangement. Our on-site project coordinator
arranges airport transfers on arrival and departure, provides city introduction
and 24/7 support while the volunteer is in country. You can read more

Not totally sure at this point, but we do have a few possibilities.
For example, we have some humanitarian assistance programs in Afghanistan
and Indonesia. Another possibility would be at some large events in
the US, like Eyes Wide Open, than may need a nurse on hand during the
even (in case of emergency, like heat stroke); The American Friends
Service Committee carries out service, development, social justice,

The past 100 years of missionary medicine have seen great successes
in much of the world. The strategies we have used and the strengths
we have focused on have brought physical and spiritual health and healing
to millions. The future demands answers to many questions: “Where do
we go from here?” “How do go together where God wants us to go?” “How
do we most wisely use personnel, partnerships and resources?” “Am I
willing to share my knowledge, lessons learned, and skills with others
and am I willing to learn from them?” and “Will we spend adequate time
in prayer seeking God’s direction for the future?” We have several challenges
for the coming years. There is no doubt that missionary medicine and
health care are still one of the most effective means of impacting lives
worldwide and for bringing about Biblical transformational change in
individuals and communities. God has, and always will, use wholistic
healthcare to heal lives and bring people to Him. |

medicines, facilities and vehicles are donated. The primary purpose
of the Rural AMerica Program is to provide vision and dental care for
underserved areas of the US. The vision care team of RAM provides people
with eye exams and eyeglasses to improve their present circumstances
and better see the world around them. For some, a pair of glasses may
allow them to drive more safely, get a job or better execute their present
job. For others, reading glasses will allow them to read more comfortably

Nurses may register at www.shelbybtvolunteers.com or http://thanvolunteer.health.state.tn.us please contact Jennifer Price, Volunteer Coordinator at 901-379-7156. Thanks |

doctors and medical staff in the treatment of patients. Volunteers also
help in the hospitals by record keeping, sanitation, nutrition or treatment
of minor injuries. FRE also offers a highly beneficial one week of the
Language and Cultural Immersion Program in these counties. The main
goal of the one week language and culture is to introduce local language,
culture, traditions and the local ways of life prior to starting the
volunteering project. The one week culture immersion program comprises
of language training, introduction sessions, discussions, 1-2 days of
travel of major tourist areas, village stays, and other programs of
cultural immersions. Though we do recommend this one week training to
make your volunteer abroad experience successful, you can choose to
take the orientation or go directly into a volunteer project. We offer
a free Spanish language program in Costa Rica. |

Here in Virginia, we have 25 active MRC groups that consist of both
Medical and Non-Medical volunteers. MRC was created in 2002, out of
President Bush's USA Freedom Corps (established to help Americans answer
his call to service and to foster a culture of service, citizenship,
and responsibility). Freedom Corps led to the development of the Dept.
of Homeland Security's Citizen Corps (established to harness the power
of individuals through education, training, and volunteer service to
make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to
the threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues, and disasters
of all kinds). The basis of each local unit's mission is to augment
and assist existing community operations during large-scale emergencies,
aid in the response to pressing health care needs, and improve community
emergency preparedness. Our volunteers are engaged on a regular basis
through participation in emergency drills, vaccination clinics, health
education and outreach, etc. When there is an emergency, MRC units are
activated in their communities on a local level first but are also able
(if willing) to assist across the state of Virginia and Nationally (if
needed). Nurses and Nurse practitioners make up about 30% of our volunteers
and we are always looking to engage more professionals in our cause.
I would love to be able to provide your registry as a resource for our
Coordinators to advertise their local MRC units' need for volunteers
(if that is the purpose of the solicitation for information below).

Our need for volunteers varies with each mission as does the number
of volunteers. The individual mission needs and specifics are based
on the request from the host organization and this specific request
drives the selection of the team members and the make-up of each mission
team. So, volunteers are matched to teams based on their skill sets

CHABHA is a small organization and we work very closely with the leaders
and children of the grassroots organizaitons. We would suggest a reading
list to prepare nurses for work in Rwanda so they would have a grasp
of the genocide and its aftermath, the efforts of the current government
and people, HIV/AIDS, and children's needs. Ours is a small NGO that
in Rwanda works with four projects. Three are associations of orphans
and other children vulnerable because of HIV/AIDs and terrible poverty.
The leaders, most young adults, make home visits to bring solace and
assess family needs. It would help them for a nurse to do home visits
and show the leaders what to look for in terms of symptoms. All the
children have basic health care; we can get children to clinics. In
the associations, between 5% and 9% of the children are infected, mostly
at birth. Nurses will work in a shared office with CHABHA-Rwanda. Nurses
will provide home visits of children with leaders of three associations:
Kigali, Kicukiro, Nyamata (rural). Nurses are also needed to lead workshops
for leaders on nutrition and hygiene. |

Gateway Medical Alliance is a humanitarian medical relief and development
program for Morocco. By delivering donated US medical supplies and equipment
to poor communities not only are people aided medically, but cross-cultural
relationships are established. GMA originated as The Morocco Project
in 1992 with several trips to assess the need for medical relief in
the country. Based on these experiences, GMA developed a humanitarian
outreach partnership by sending medical supplies and refurbished medical
equipment to many of Morocco’s rural hospitals and primary care centers
in cooperation with the Moroccan Ministry of Health, Moroccan charitable
associations, Moroccan private health care workers, and expatriates
living and working in Morocco. Early shipments of supplies and equipment
were done through Northwest Teams International, a Portland, Oregon,
USA non-profit organization. As of December 2006 GMA has successfully
delivered nineteen shipping containers with a total value of approximately
$3.25 million. Working with Morocco-based expatriate colleagues and
heath care workers GMA representatives have been able to follow up on
the deliveries to optimize future donations. Further assessment of need,
done in conjunction with the follow-ups, assures improved and focused
future deliveries. More than thirty health care facilities have received
materials, all of which have been visited by GMA representatives. Additional
sites for donation are continually being added. Procurement and shipping
of medical supplies continues to be one of the main focuses of our organization.
Currently we do not use nurses in the field but are looking into this
possibilty. Volunteers are needed to help sort and pack medical supplies. |

The Skagit County Medical Reserve Corps is made up of volunteers to
respond to Public Health. The Medical Reserve Corps addresses issues
before crisis, assuring community wellness through prevention. Our volunteers
can help with immunizations, smoking cessation, dental hygiene, and
activity to reduce obesity. During crisis nurse volunteers are critical
to meet surge demands, especially if acute care settings are overloaded.
They can provide triage, first aid, and care. After a crisis, the skills
of Public Health restore Water, Hygiene, Food, and Communicable Disease
wellness. A "crisis" is when more bad is happening than good through
exposure to aversive stimuli. Crisis can be anything from a very severe
flu season, to earthquakes, to voluntary acts of terrorism. The Medical
Reserve Corps staff is signed up and vetted preferably before a crisis,
takes a couple of online courses, and attends one orientation meeting. |

EHA is a fellowship of institutions and individuals that exists to
transform communities through caring, with primary focus on the poor
and marginalized. Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) was founded in
1970 as an indigenous Christian health and development agency serving
the people of North India. Its primary focus is the poor, largely in
rural areas. With a catchment population of nearly seven million, EHA
treats more than 500,000 patients each year in some of India's most
needy areas. EHA is committed to the transformation of communities with
programmes that invest in the health and well being of everyone, irrespective
of caste, creed or race. It aims to focus on the development and empowerment
of women and the health and nurture of the under fives. The poorest
of the poor rarely access health care facilities even at a charitable
hospital - therefore EHA is committed to promotive and preventative
health programmes. A core activity is training local village women in
areas from basic health and hygiene to antenatal care of pregnant women,
which together can transform a whole community. Added to this are non-medical
interventions in health. Wherever literacy programmes are in place one
of the first effects is a fall in the infant mortality rate. Teaching
and training in income generation skills and co-operative banking schemes
allows villagers to resolve problems in their own way, giving them hope
for the future. The long-term result is a community with increased capacity
to deal with the challenges it faces and able to enjoy sustainability
in their own development |

For a significant number of Nepali people, it is very difficult to
receive proper health care. Many of the state’s health centers—established
to provide services in rural areas—are inadequately staffed. Internship
Nepal gathers compassionate volunteer groups to help alleviate this
problem in an effort to improve the quality of health care for disadvantaged
Nepali people. Volunteers in this program assist local doctors and medical
staffs in the treatment of patients. Volunteers may also participate
in hospital programs in a variety of fields such as record keeping,
sanitation, nutrition, or treatment of minor injuries. Our medical volunteering
program places doctors, nurses, and medical school students in hospitals
and clinics throughout Nepal. We have standing requests from local facilities
for Internists, Urologists, Surgeons, Oncologists, Ophthalmologists,
Nurses, and Dentists. Volunteers have the option of working in either
an urban or rural setting.
As a medical school student, you will participate in a wide range of
activities. You will accompany doctors on their rounds, explore different
treatments for simple ailments, provide physical therapy, and take part
in vaccination programs. Depending on the timing of your visit, you
will have the opportunity to visit large general hospitals, maternity
clinics, children's hospitals, HIV/AIDS wards, and alternative-medicine
clinics. Your visits will be given some context by local doctors and
nurses who will discuss issues such as typical illnesses/treatments
and the general state of health care in Nepal. |

Only seasoned nurses, preferably with training and coaching experience
as well as strong clinical background, will be considered for these
advisory posts. A BSN or equivalent is required, along with at least
5 years experience. Additional specialization may be beneficial, although
the nurse would need to be prepared to work at a basic clinical level
due to the present realities of nursing in rural Nepal. |
Roles vary over time as the needs of our partners change. Because
Nepal currently has a large number of national nurses, expatriates are
not invited for routine nursing. Instead, experienced expatriate nurses
are needed to mentor and encourage national nurses to ever stronger
clinical and compassionate practice. As advisors and development professionals,
expatriate nurses may be asked to build the capacity of senior national
nurses to run their departments or add a clinical service. Alternatively,
s/he may be needed to come alongside new graduates to help develop their
general clinical skills and care standards. As such we need experience,
confident, supportive nurses - people willing to help others care for
patients. Nurses need to be prepared to be very flexible and comfortable
with ambiguity. Those with a sense of humor will generally have a better
time! INF/W makes available a four-month language course for those who
are not fluent in Nepali language. The costs of this course are borne
by the nurse. English is spoken in Nepal, but less so in the remote
postings than in urban centers. INF/W is a Christian mission serving
Nepali people through health and development work. Expatriate members
are committed Christians and are sent by Christian sending agencies
in their home countries. |

those with chronic illness and helping them stabilize their disease
process. Our clinic currently has 2 clinics per month - the 1st and

of clinic that nurses in the vicinity would like to volunteer at! We

communities and rural clinics. Most clinics are very busy, understaffed;
with limited medical supplies. There is a wide variety of cases but
disease such as malaria, HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and syphilis, as well
as childbirth/maternity needs are most common. Volunteers with medical
training; doctors, nurses, paramedics, lab technicians participate in
direct patient care such as diagnosing, injections, IV starts and lab
work.. Nursing and medical students are welcome and assist with tasks
like dressing wounds, record and immunization chart keeping, helping
dispense medications, helping to screen and organize patients and assisting
with administrative needs or seminars. Volunteers can also work with
the HIV/Aids Prevention Program - Volunteers work with along side the
ACF staffs in providing HIV/AIDS education and support to rural communities.
This project focuses on providing culturally sensitive methods of awareness
and education with the goal of preventing transmission of the disease
and seeks to offer assistance and encouragement to those infected with
the virus. Some of the activities for volunteers include: Promoting
safer sex through education, assisting with home-based care for victims
with HIV/Aids, providing free blood testing for the disease, woman empowerment
projects for surviving widows of the community, and most especially
rural outreach programs to those in need with food distribution, assistance
with activities of daily living and providing words of encouragement.
Experience in this field is not required. Volunteers with a strong interest
in making a difference are welcome |

Nurses have always been a cornerstone for the provision of services
by the American Red Cross. Historically, Red Cross nurses have provided
their assistance during times of disaster and conflict beginning with
the 1889 Johnstown floods and the 1888 Yellow Fever epidemic. The Red
Cross Nursing Service was formally established by Jane Delano in 1909.
Red Cross nursing has also had a major role in the historical evolution
of nursing and nursing leadership in the United States with many Red
Cross nurses, including Jane Delano, Clara Noyes, Julia Stimson and
others playing strategic roles in the development of American nursing.
More than 30,000 nurses continue to be involved in paid and volunteer
capacities at all levels and in all service areas throughout the American
Red Cross. These activities consist of: Providing direct services: e.g.
local Disaster Action Teams (DAT), Health Fairs, volunteer in military
clinics and hospitals, blood collection team, first aid stations; Teaching
and developing courses: CPR/First Aid, Automatic emergency Defibrillator(AED),
Disaster Health Services, Nurse Assistant Training, Babysitting, Family
Caregiving; Acting in management and supervisory roles: including Chapter
and Blood Services region executives; Functioning in governance roles:
local board member to national Board of Governors. To volunteer please
find and contact your local chapter to find out how to get involved!

The responsibilities of MRC volunteers vary, depending on the nature
of the needs in the community. MRC volunteers can assist during emergencies
and assist with public initiatives and ongoing community health outreach
and education efforts. Major emergencies can overwhelm the capabilities
of first responders, particularly during the first 12 to 72 hours. Medical
and other health volunteers can provide an important "surge" capacity
during this critical period. They also can augment medical staff shortages
at local medical and emergency facilities. In short, communities often
need medically trained individuals and others to fill in the gaps in
their emergency response plans and to improve their response capabilities
overall. MRC volunteers also strengthen the overall health of Americans
by participating in general public health initiatives such as flu vaccination
clinics and diabetes detection programs. The U.S. Surgeon General has
outlined his priorities for the health of individuals and the nation
as a whole. With an overarching goal to improve health literacy, he
encourages MRC volunteers to work toward increasing disease and injury
prevention, eliminating healt |
