Ines dreamed of returning to Ecuador, the country of her birth, to provide the same type of medical care for the country's poorest residents, a third of whom would never receive medical care for their infirmities without an intervention from volunteer medical professionals. IMA, designated as a not-for-profit entity by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service in 2002, has organized five trips to Ecuador with teams of plastic and orthopedic surgeons, doctors in a variety of specialties, dentists and support staff. The work began in partnership with Jeronimo and Noemia Cessito, local Christian leaders who had a vision to help their community. They named the project Ray of Light, and in the ensuing years it has grown to include several schools, a medical clinic, farm, AIDS hospice, child sponsorship program and several church plants. In 2003 we started a second project in Kenya located just west of Nairobi in Kikuya County (the area where the film Out of Africa was shot). It's called the Mayatima Project after the Swahili word for orphan, and as the name suggests, its focus is on the care of HIV-AIDS orphans in that area. It was started by George and Jane Kairie, local Christian leaders who provided the original vision for the work and who continue to direct the project to this day. In the past three years, the project has grown to include a poultry and dairy farm and nearly 100 children enrolled in a child sponsorship program. Details

We have a faith community nurse who goes as our representative into the community, we also utilize Nurse Practitioners as providers in the clinic, - we are transitioning to a "nurse triage" office and education position for RN's who volunteer. LPN's, MA's and CNA's are utilized to assist in vital signs, simple lab tests and patient histories. Everyone working in this clinic is volunteer and at the end of this month we will be covered by the Federal Torte Act for malpractice as well as the current coverage we have under the Michigan Good Samaritan Act and the Volunteer Protection Act. We offer our services free of charge and do not provide care to any insured persons, including those with Medicaid or Medicare. Our target are the people who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid because they are working, but perhaps are working a couple of part time jobs or are not offered health care in their job. So financially, they must make less than twice Federal Poverty guidelines. Details

The IHP-USINC is a sister organization in the US that helps raise funds. The IHP TZ is an official NGO (non governmental international organization) in Tanzania that is on the ground working with the funds to develop the projects. While working on our first project, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to help improve the health care system in Tanzania. They recognized the huge problems that Tanzania faces especially with the high incidence of both HIV/AIDS and poverty. 2008 Projects: In Mwanza, IHP is currently designing and renovating a Women’s Health and Birthing Center. The area has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate. In spite of training traditional midwifes, the high rate has continued. The East of Lake Victoria Diocese of the Lutheran Church has donated a lovely 16 room complex for the beginning of a health center soon to be developed into a hospital. The large number of orphans due to death of parents by AIDS and the large number of older women who are sometimes thought to be witches and are killed, make an idea pairing for an orphanage and a women’s wisdom center. The orphanage will be constructed in family groups with the older women fulfilling the role of grandmother. The need for a specialized non-profit pediatric HIV/AIDS hospital is great since none currently exists in Tanzania. All the plans for the hospital are ready as well as approval by various governmental organizations and land is in the process of being purchased. The needs for this hospital are financial at this point, with later needs encompassing volunteers, students, equipment, and research. The project proposal is available to those who are interested. Besides the plans, the proposal includes equipment lists, supply lists, furnishing lists and a comprehensive list of proposals for hospital projects. These activities include outreach, educational programs, specialized maternity and infant care for HIV+ mothers and infants as well as an orphanage for under 5 children with HIV/AIDS. A hostel for volunteers is also planned. In addition to the above projects, medical teams and personnel as well as volunteers come to help improve the health care in Tanzania. IHP serves as the vehicle to assist them to work in areas suited to their desires and abilities as well as the needs of the people in the selected area. Details

It has been determined that thousands of medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to assist the Health Department in emergency response efforts. In the event of an epidemic or a bioterrorism attack, Public Health Reserve Corps (PHRC) volunteer nurses would be called upon to assist in providing medication or immunizations. In a worst case scenario, this could mean providing these services for all residents of Shelby County, nearly 1 million people. To accomplish this monumental task , we would have to staff 20 public health clinics located throughout Shelby County for 24 hours, 7 days per week for 10 consecutive days, requiring the assistance of 4,600 volunteers each day. In an effort to expedite our alerting processes, our program is trying to pre-register as many healthcare professional as possible so, when a disaster occurs, the emergency response will be more efficient and effective due to the fact of verify the nurses information in advance. The future demands answers to many questions: “Where do we go from here?” “How do go together where God wants us to go?” “How do we most wisely use personnel, partnerships and resources?” “Am I willing to share my knowledge, lessons learned, and skills with others and am I willing to learn from them?” and “Will we spend adequate time in prayer seeking God’s direction for the future?” We have several challenges for the coming years. There is no doubt that missionary medicine and health care are still one of the most effective means of impacting lives worldwide and for bringing about Biblical transformational change in individuals and communities. Medical supplies, medicines, facilities and vehicles are donated. The primary purpose of the Rural AMerica Program is to provide vision and dental care for underserved areas of the US. The vision care team of RAM provides people with eye exams and eyeglasses to improve their present circumstances and better see the world around them. For some, a pair of glasses may allow them to drive more safely, get a job or better execute their present job. For others, reading glasses will allow them to read more comfortably or thread a needle for the first time in years. The main service to be provided by the RN is to triage all patients before they receive vision, dental and some medical services.

MRC was created in 2002, out of President Bush's USA Freedom Corps (established to help Americans answer his call to service and to foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility). Freedom Corps led to the development of the Dept. of Homeland Security's Citizen Corps (established to harness the power of individuals through education, training, and volunteer service to make communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime, public health issues, and disasters of all kinds). The basis of each local unit's mission is to augment and assist existing community operations during large-scale emergencies, aid in the response to pressing health care needs, and improve community emergency preparedness. Our volunteers are engaged on a regular basis through participation in emergency drills, vaccination clinics, health education and outreach, etc. When there is an emergency, MRC units are activated in their communities on a local level first but are also able (if willing) to assist across the state of Virginia and Nationally (if needed). Nurses and Nurse practitioners make up about 30% of our volunteers and we are always looking to engage more professionals in our cause. Ours is a small NGO that in Rwanda works with four projects. Three are associations of orphans and other children vulnerable because of HIV/AIDs and terrible poverty. The leaders, most young adults, make home visits to bring solace and assess family needs. It would help them for a nurse to do home visits and show the leaders what to look for in terms of symptoms. All the children have basic health care; we can get children to clinics. In the associations, between 5% and 9% of the children are infected, mostly at birth. By delivering donated US medical supplies and equipment to poor communities not only are people aided medically, but cross-cultural relationships are established. GMA originated as The Morocco Project in 1992 with several trips to assess the need for medical relief in the country. Based on these experiences, GMA developed a humanitarian outreach partnership by sending medical supplies and refurbished medical equipment to many of Morocco’s rural hospitals and primary care centers in cooperation with the Moroccan Ministry of Health, Moroccan charitable associations, Moroccan private health care workers, and expatriates living and working in Morocco. Early shipments of supplies and equipment were done through Northwest Teams International, a Portland, Oregon, USA non-profit organization. As of December 2006 GMA has successfully delivered nineteen shipping containers with a total value of approximately $3.25 million. Working with Morocco-based expatriate colleagues and heath care workers GMA representatives have been able to follow up on the deliveries to optimize future donations. Further assessment of need, done in conjunction with the follow-ups, assures improved and focused future deliveries. More than thirty health care facilities have received materials, all of which have been visited by GMA representatives. Additional sites for donation are continually being added. Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) was founded in 1970 as an indigenous Christian health and development agency serving the people of North India. Its primary focus is the poor, largely in rural areas. With a catchment population of nearly seven million, EHA treats more than 500,000 patients each year in some of India's most needy areas. EHA is committed to the transformation of communities with programmes that invest in the health and well being of everyone, irrespective of caste, creed or race. It aims to focus on the development and empowerment of women and the health and nurture of the under fives. The poorest of the poor rarely access health care facilities even at a charitable hospital - therefore EHA is committed to promotive and preventative health programmes. A core activity is training local village women in areas from basic health and hygiene to antenatal care of pregnant women, which together can transform a whole community. Added to this are non-medical interventions in health. Wherever literacy programmes are in place one of the first effects is a fall in the infant mortality rate. Teaching and training in income generation skills and co-operative banking schemes allows villagers to resolve problems in their own way, giving them hope for the future. The long-term result is a community with increased capacity to deal with the challenges it faces and able to enjoy sustainability in their own development Details

Many of the state’s health centers—established to provide services in rural areas—are inadequately staffed. Internship Nepal gathers compassionate volunteer groups to help alleviate this problem in an effort to improve the quality of health care for disadvantaged Nepali people. Volunteers in this program assist local doctors and medical staffs in the treatment of patients. Volunteers may also participate in hospital programs in a variety of fields such as record keeping, sanitation, nutrition, or treatment of minor injuries. Our medical volunteering program places doctors, nurses, and medical school students in hospitals and clinics throughout Nepal. We have standing requests from local facilities for Internists, Urologists, Surgeons, Oncologists, Ophthalmologists, Nurses, and Dentists. Volunteers have the option of working in either an urban or rural setting.
As a medical school student, you will participate in a wide range of activities. You will accompany doctors on their rounds, explore different treatments for simple ailments, provide physical therapy, and take part in vaccination programs. Depending on the timing of your visit, you will have the opportunity to visit large general hospitals, maternity clinics, children's hospitals, HIV/AIDS wards, and alternative-medicine clinics. Your visits will be given some context by local doctors and nurses who will discuss issues such as typical illnesses/treatments and the general state of health care in Nepal.

A BSN or equivalent is required, along with at least 5 years experience. Additional specialization may be beneficial, although the nurse would need to be prepared to work at a basic clinical level due to the present realities of nursing in rural Nepal. Roles vary over time as the needs of our partners change. Because Nepal currently has a large number of national nurses, expatriates are not invited for routine nursing. Instead, experienced expatriate nurses are needed to mentor and encourage national nurses to ever stronger clinical and compassionate practice. As advisors and development professionals, expatriate nurses may be asked to build the capacity of senior national nurses to run their departments or add a clinical service. Alternatively, s/he may be needed to come alongside new graduates to help develop their general clinical skills and care standards. As such we need experience, confident, supportive nurses - people willing to help others care for patients. Nurses need to be prepared to be very flexible and comfortable with ambiguity. Those with a sense of humor will generally have a better time! INF/W makes available a four-month language course for those who are not fluent in Nepali language. The costs of this course are borne by the nurse. English is spoken in Nepal, but less so in the remote postings than in urban centers. INF/W is a Christian mission serving Nepali people through health and development work. Expatriate members are committed Christians and are sent by Christian sending agencies in their home countries. Disaster Nursing LOCAL Medical Reserve Corps www.medicalreservecorps.gov                                 The responsibilities of MRC volunteers vary, depending on the nature of the needs in the community. MRC volunteers can assist during emergencies and assist with public initiatives and ongoing community health outreach and education efforts. Major emergencies can overwhelm the capabilities of first responders, particularly during the first 12 to 72 hours. Medical and other health volunteers can provide an important "surge" capacity during this critical period. They also can augment medical staff shortages at local medical and emergency facilities. In short, communities often need medically trained individuals and others to fill in the gaps in their emergency response plans and to improve their response capabilities overall. MRC volunteers also strengthen the overall health of Americans by participating in general public health initiatives such as flu vaccination clinics and diabetes detection programs. The U.S. Surgeon General has outlined his priorities for the health of individuals and the nation as a whole. With an overarching goal to improve health literacy, he encourages MRC volunteers to work toward increasing disease and injury prevention, eliminating healt
