General nursing and palliative care: We have a palliative care programme in the rural areas for patients with HIV, AIDS, TB, cancer and other terminal diagnoses who qualify for admission to the care facility. The nurse will have to work under the direction of a registered professional nurse. Since becoming registered with the South African Nursing Council is a long process, the volunteer nurse may have to be prepared to work below the level of their expertise. The manager of the facility is a registered professional palliative nurse. The work will entail working in a team and following patient care plans, supervising and training junior student nurses.
